UNIVERSITY TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN IS NOW POWERED BY CLEAN ENERGY
KUALA LUMPUR, 7 March 2022
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), a leading not-for-profit private university in Malaysia signed a long-term solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) gearing towards clean energy transition with Ditrolic Energy, a leading Malaysian clean energy solutions company. Under this agreement, Ditrolic Energy has successfully installed 8,897 on-site rooftop solar panels on the campus buildings while UTAR will pay for the clean and cheaper electricity generated for the agreed period of time, without taking any upfront investments.
With over 8000 solar panels installed, the system is expected to generate around 5.4 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity and offsetting 3,150 metric Tons (MT) of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) annually in total. The solar system will be able to produce and supply adequate green electricity to the entire campus, enabling UTAR to offset around 60% on electricity produced from non-renewable sources which is a major cause of carbon emission. Due to a significantly lower electricity tariff than the present utility rate, UTAR is expected to save RM12 million over the next 20 years under the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Ditrolic Energy.
UTAR President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat said that the University has taken steps to work towards sustainability by embarking on a jouney to reduce its carbon footprint and attaining net zero carbon in the future.” We have taken this commitment with Ditrolic Energy to make a positive change and a step towards cleaner energy in favor of a greener environment and a more sustainable future. This agreement with Ditrolic Energy will not only reduce our energy costs in the long run, but also provide an opportunity for our students to learn and be educated on the importance of a sustainable future by reducing our carbon emissions now. “
Mr. Tham Chee Aun, Group CEO of Ditrolic Energy, is pleased that the system has been completed on time to start delivering clean electricity to Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) despite many pandemic related challenges faced during the construction stage.
“The completion of this landmark project for a large local university has demonstrated the strength of our execution and our ability to deliver affordable and long term clean energy solution to all segment of the society. We are pleased that this clean-energy partnership supports UTAR in developing a more sustainable and environmental-friendly campus. With it, UTAR will become one of the few pioneers of Malaysian universities to employ clean energy to power their campus operation. As one of the largest clean energy provider in Malaysia, Ditrolic Energy is committed to deliver reliable and affordable clean energy solutions in line with Malaysia’s aspiration to realise the vision of net zero carbon by 2050.”
